FIRST HUNT and FIRST DEER!!

As you all know - Ryan loves the outdoors, I mean REALLY LOVES the outdoors. Anything to do with it, hunting, fishing, camping, etc etc...the list could go on forever!!
Well last year for Christmas my sister and brother in law - Nan and Shane - decided to get Ryan his Hunters Education Class and his 2009 Deer Tag. The 2009 deer hunt opened last Saturday Oct 17th. Ryan was unable to go opening day because, he is in the middle of football season and had a critical game. (FYI - there are 4 kids on his team that missed as well).

So Wednesday opened up a SHORT hunt in our Stansbury mountains to the west of us about 3 miles. It is a shortened hunt due to the recent fires in the mountains. It ran from Wed thru Sunday. Shane decides that we better put the deer tag to good use, and Ryan missed his first practice since July and headed to the hills. All that they saw that night were doe's. Ryan came home disappointed.

They decided to head back up on Friday after school, so at 3:30 Shane comes and gets Leo and Ryan and they head back up in the hills. They were out of the truck and headed up the hill to where Shane wanted to go by 4:00.
Well now I am in SLC waiting for Aynsley while she was in dance class, at 5:17 I get a text from Leo - it says - ooohhhhh mmmmyyyyyy!!! maybe! -- I am so excited! I hurry and text back - NO WAY! - I sit there waiting and waiting and then about 10 minutes later - this is the picture comes thru on my phone.
I started to cry! SERIOUSLY!! I was so happy for Ryan! He loves hunting so much and he was so looking forward to this moment!!

So here is the story from Ryan how it happened - They were walking to an area that Shane for sure thought that they would see some. As they were walking all 3 of them. Shane stops them and whispers, "STOP - Ryan right there , get ready!" So then Ryan gets the gun loaded and gets in position and puts the scope on the deer, and waits. He said he took a deep breath in and then the deer came to were he could get a shot. He pulled the trigger and the saw the deer stumbling around.
Next Ryan says, (and Leo can back this up) Shane said "gimme the gun". Ryan then handed him the gun and LIGHTENING FAST SPEED Shane had the old shell out and a new bullet in and a shot off hitting the deer again (just to make sure we got him!) Then Ryan said, "he went down".
It ended up being 124 yard shot - Ryan hit him in the belly, (Shane saw that one hit), we don't know where Shane hit, so just maybe Ryan's shot did him in. Either way - Ryan got him!
Ryan said after that, his heart was racing so fast and he was shaking bad... he couldn't believe that he got one!!

So then Leo, Ryan and Shane headed down the canyon and back up a little ways and got to where he was. Dad was very proud of him, and I was so happy that Leo was there to see him get his first one!
Ryan tells me that when they "gutted" the deer it was a horrible smell and was kinda gross! Leo said the smell was BAD - and stayed in his nose hairs till he got home and showered!! Leo and Shane took turns dragging the deer out..both were sweating like pigs, but they got it out and got it home and to Thompsons!
The only thing that would have made it even more perfect is if Grandpa would have been there too!! Grandpa and Gramma had gone to Idaho for a craft show, I called him about 5:30 and told him Ryan had got his deer and I have to tell you, I have never heard so much excitement in his voice. I am pretty sure that he was ecstatic! Ryan did call him when he got home and had to give him all the details too. He said "Grandpa was pretty excited for me Mom". I am sure that Grandpa will be there when he gets the big one!!Congratulations Ryan!! We love you and are so happy that you got some horns for your wall!!
